I'm pretty sure, now, that it was a rattle snake. The fox snake can only rattle if it can shake debris, but there was no debris, so that was the sound of the rattle. We also saw an Eastern Hognose, flaring its neck.
Looks like a rattler to me. How do I know if the snake I've seen is a Massasauga or a Fox Snake?.Good wildlife sighting! Where was it?
On the road about 200 metres west of the cottage.
That's actually about where we saw one several years ago.
